Northshore Utility District in Kenmore, Washington is seeking a Maintenance Aide. The Maintenance Aide position is a one-year limited term position with the potential for the right candidate being eligible to promote to a Utility Worker position. 

This position is open until filled with the first review of applicants on August 21, 2024, and may be closed at any time a qualified candidate is selected.

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES: Maintains all components of the District’s water distribution and sewage collection systems as directed.    Works as a general laborer assisting crewmembers under routine supervision; receives daily work assignments, performs independent tasks only for routine works assignments or after receiving direction guidance or instruction is given for new or unfamiliar tasks. Generally aided with more skilled tasks.

REPORTING DIRECTLY TO: Utility Worker – Lead (work directions only – no formal reporting relationship)

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Maintains and assists with repairs of the following under supervision:
    • Fire hydrants
    • Manholes / clean outs
    • Valves
    • Water line flushing
    • Sewer line cleaning
    • Cross-connection control
    • Water quality program – sample stand maintenance
  • Performs general routine maintenance of:
    • Water and sewer pump stations
    • Tanks
    • Wetwells, etc.
  • Practices safety in traffic control and work practices.
  • Responds to routine customer service calls.
  • Flagging / traffic control.
  • Top attendant duties of confined space
  • General labor i.e., shoveling, raking, sweeping, trimming, vegetation control, cleaning tools and equipment.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic understanding of the job duties with progressive skills acquisition of the following:
    • Defensive driving practices and precautions.
    • Assist with meter setting and repair.
    • Concrete and asphalt work, landscaping, paving and erosion control.
    • Safety rules, confined space entry rules, trenching and shoring regulations, procedures and practices, and standards/regulations used in the installation of water and sewer systems.
    • Operating tools such as jackhammers, cut-off saws, and various hand tools.
    • Operating and maneuvering trucks and trailers.
    • Ability to use computers/tablets and electronic devices to accurately log and track work activities.
    • Performing basic mathematical computations.
    • Reading and accurately interpreting mapping systems, drawing as-built sketches, blueprints, and maps.
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision.
  • Communication, oral and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, and the public.

   Experience/Education:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • General mechanical skills or aptitude.
  • Experience with underground utility preferred. Selected candidates must have the ability to earn an Industrial First Aid/CPR, Confined Space, Flagger, and Forklift Certification cards.

   Licensing Requirements:

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.

   Other Requirements: Reliable and regular attendance, and the ability to work harmoniously with other employees.

 WORKING CONDITIONS: Most work is performed outdoors exposed to traffic hazards and may be at high elevations or deep in underground vaults.  Nights and odd hours in response to emergencies is required.  This position typically requires fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, bending, crawling, lifting, pushing, and pulling and repetitive motions.  Lifting in excess of 90 pounds of weight to move and operate necessary tools and equipment.
